To face the challenge, good planning and management practices are needed. A key to the management of groundwater is the ability to model the movement of fluids and contaminants in the subsurface. The purpose of this book is to construct conceptual and mathematical models that can provide the information required for making decisions associated with the management of groundwater resources, and the remediation of contaminated aquifers. The basic approach of this book is to accurately describe the underlying physics of groundwater flow and solute transport in heterogeneous porous media, starting at the microscopic level, and to rigorously derive their mathematical representation at the macroscopic levels.

Modeling Groundwater Flow and Contaminant Transport

This effect is attributed to heterogeneity of aquifers manifesting in the spatial variability of the logconductivity Y. In all cases ergodicity, which allows to exchange the unknown BTC with the ensemble mean, was assumed to prevail for large plumes, compared to the logconductivity integral scale. Besides, the various statistical parameters characterizing the logconductivity structure as well as the mean flow were assumed to be known deterministically. The present paper investigates the uncertainty of the non-ergodic BTC due to the finiteness of the plume size as well as due to the uncertainty of the various parameters on which the BTC depends. By the use of a simplified transport model we developed in the past which led to accurate results for ergodic plumes , we were able to get simple results for the variance of the BTC.

Models of groundwater flow are widely used for a variety of purposes ranging from water supply studies to designing contaminant cleanup. In general, groundwater flow system can be divided into steady-state and transient. In the present work, we investigate the usefulness of finite element method in modelling of steady-state subsurface fluid flow and transient solute transport along a vertical cross section in an unconfined aquifer. Contaminant transport in subsurface water is the major pathway for contamination spread from contaminated sites to groundwater supplies, to remediate a contaminated site. The aim of this paper was to set up the groundwater contaminant transport model for the Wang-Tien landfill site, in southwestern Taiwan, which exhibits high contamination of soil and groundwater and therefore represents a potential threat for the adjacent Hsu-Hsian Creek.
