During the Quiz End of Quiz. Statistical process control: Through the use of control charts and data collected for the samples at the various stages of production a manufacturing product can be monitored Troubleshooting studies: At the end of the line product, a trouble-shooting study can be carried out to see whether the changes in the inputs are associated with the output variables.

For efficient, effective and economical operation in a manufacturing unit of an organization, it is essential to integrate the production planning and control system. Production planning and subsequent production control follow adaption of product design and finalization of a production process. Production planning and control address a fundamental problem of low productivity, inventory management and resource utilization.

Production planning and subsequent production control follow adaption of product design and finalization of a production process. Production control ensures that production team can achieve required production target, optimum utilization of resources, quality management and cost savings.

The benefits of production planning and control are as follows: 1. It ensures that optimum utilization of production capacity is achieved, by proper scheduling of the machine items, which reduces the idle time, as well as over use. It ensures that inventory level are maintained at optimum levels at all time, i.

It also ensures that production time is kept at optimum level and thereby increasing the turnover time. Since it overlooks all aspects of production, quality of final product is always maintained. It involves taking a long-term view at overall production planning.

At each stage of processing, there will be value addition. Some examples of production are: manufacturing custom-made products like, boilers with a specific capacity, constructing flats, some structural fabrication works for selected customers, etc.

Industrial Engineering 3 The production system of an organization is that part, which produces products of an organization. It is that activity whereby resources, flowing within a defined system, are combined and transformed in a controlled manner to add value in accordance with the policies communicated by management. A simplified production system is shown in fig. The definition of a production system is thus based on four main elements: the input, the resources, the production process and the output.

Most of the organizations including non-profit organization can be described as production systems. These organizations transform or convert a set of inputs such as materials, labour, equipment, energy etc. The outputs of a production system are normally called products. These products may be: a Tangible goods b Intangible services c combination of a and b.

Production system refers to manufacturing subsystem that includes all functions required to design, produce, distribute and service a manufactured product. Production is the basic activity of all organizations and all other activities revolve around production activity. The output of production is the creation of goods and services which satisfy the needs of the customers.

In some organization the product is physical tangible good. For example, refrigerators, motor cars, television, toothpaste etc.

The production system has the following characteristics: 1. Production is an organized activity, so every production system has an objective. There exists a feedback about the activities which is essential to control and improve system performance. The transformation process involves many activities and operation necessary to change inputs to output.

These operations and activities can be mechanical, chemical, inspection and control, material handling operation etc. The above 4.

Industrial Engineering 4 requirements of a production system depend on the type of product that the company offers and the strategy that it employs to serve its customers.

Production systems can be basically classified mainly into two types, Intermittent Production and Continuous Production.

Furniture manufacturing company, restaurant, prototype industry. Some equipment overloaded. High variety of products and low volume. Use of general purpose machines and facilities. Highly skilled operators who can take up each job as a challenge because of uniqueness.

Large inventory of materials, tools, parts. Industrial Engineering 5 5. Detailed planning is essential for sequencing the requirements of each product, capacities for each work centre and order priorities. Because of general purpose machines and facilities variety of products can be produced. Operators will become more skilled and competent, as each job gives them learning opportunities. Full potential of operators can be utilised.

Opportunity exists for creative methods and innovative ideas. Higher cost due to frequent set up changes. Higher level of inventory at all levels and hence higher inventory cost. Production planning is complicated. Larger space requirements. When there is shorter production runs.

When plant and machinery are flexible. When plant and machinery set up is used for the production of item in a batch and change of set up is required for processing the next batch.

When manufacturing lead time and cost are lower as compared to job order production. Better utilization of plant and machinery. Promotes functional specialization. Cost per unit is lower as compared to job order production.

Lower investment in plant and machinery. Flexibility to accommodate and process number of products. Job satisfaction exists for operators. Material handling is complex because of irregular and longer flows. Production planning and control is complex. Work in process inventory is higher compared to continuous production. Higher set up costs due to frequent changes in set up. This production system is justified by very large volume of production. The machines are arranged in a line or product layout.

Product and process standardisation exists and all outputs follow the same path. Standardisation of product and process sequence. Dedicated special purpose machines having higher production capacities and output rates. Large volume of products. Shorter cycle time of production.

Production Planning and Control - PPC Study Materials

Similarly production, resources, such as distinct machines or labor pools, are aggregated into an aggregate, machine or labor resource. Another example is when the firm works multiple shifts, and the variable costs differ between these shifts. The variable production cost is usually more during overtime, as, workers earn a rate premium. Then we prove the existence and uniqueness of the optimal solution of the acquisition quantity and derive the formulation of the optimal solution. In P8, we assume that this is not possible; that is, every period that we produce an item we incur, a setup. The linear programming relaxation of the new models is very effective in generating bounds. There might be limits on how quickly new, workers can be added due to training requirements.

Production planning and control is a predetermined process which includes the use of human resource, raw materials, machines etc. PPC is the technique to plan each and every step in a long series of separate operation. It helps to take the right decision at the right time and at the right place to achieve maximum efficiency. Production Planning and Control. It is about selection of path or route through which raw materials pass in order to make it into a finished product. The points to be noted while routing process are — full capacity of machines, economical and short route and availability of alternate routing.

We can, modify this formulation for this case by defining a variable to represent new backorders, ]; then we would apply the backorder cost to this, variable in the objective function. Production is an intentional act of producing something in an organized manner. If the, to P8.

The main purpose of production planning and control (PPC) is to establish routes and schedules for the work that will ensure the optimum utilization of materials.
