SAARC: Main Objectives of SAARC

The idea of regional cooperation in South Asia was first raised in November After consultations, the foreign secretaries of the seven founding countries—Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka—met for the first time in Colombo in April This was followed a few months later by a meeting of the Committee of the Whole, which identified five broad areas for regional cooperation. The SAARC seeks to promote the welfare of the peoples of South Asia, strengthen collective self-reliance, promote active collaboration and mutual assistance in various fields, and cooperate with international and regional organizations.
