In computers, parallel computing is closely related to parallel processing or concurrent computing.

Graph network computations are critical kernels in many algorithms in data mining, data analysis, scientific computing, computational science and engineering, etc. In large-scale applications, the graph computations need to be performed in parallel. Parallelizing graph algorithms effectively — with emphasis on scalability and performance — is particularly challenging for a variety of reasons: In many graph algorithms runtime is dominated by memory latency rather than processor speed, there exist little computation to hide memory access costs, data locality is poor, and available concurrency is low. Listed below in reverse chronological order are papers we have written together with a number of different collaborators introducing a range of techniques for dealing with these challenges in the context of a variety graph problems. His more recent effort targets the emerging and rapidly growing multicore platforms as well as massively multithreaded platforms. The list also includes his recent works on other combinatorial problems than graph problems and on problems around matrix computations. At SCADS, we are in general interested in exploring the interplay between algorithms, architectures, and applications in developing scalable systems.

Parallel and Distributed Computing: State-of-the-Art and Emerging Trends

Parallel computing is a type of computation where many calculations or the execution of processes are carried out simultaneously. There are several different forms of parallel computing: bit-level , instruction-level , data , and task parallelism. Parallelism has long been employed in high-performance computing , but has gained broader interest due to the physical constraints preventing frequency scaling. Parallel computing is closely related to concurrent computing —they are frequently used together, and often conflated, though the two are distinct: it is possible to have parallelism without concurrency such as bit-level parallelism , and concurrency without parallelism such as multitasking by time-sharing on a single-core CPU. In contrast, in concurrent computing, the various processes often do not address related tasks; when they do, as is typical in distributed computing , the separate tasks may have a varied nature and often require some inter-process communication during execution. Parallel computers can be roughly classified according to the level at which the hardware supports parallelism, with multi-core and multi-processor computers having multiple processing elements within a single machine, while clusters , MPPs , and grids use multiple computers to work on the same task. Specialized parallel computer architectures are sometimes used alongside traditional processors, for accelerating specific tasks.

A clear illustration of how parallel computers can be successfully applied to large-scale scientific computations. This book demonstrates how a variety of applications in physics, biology, mathematics and other sciences were implemented on real parallel computers to produce new scientific results. It investigates issues of fine-grained parallelism relevant for future supercomputers with particular emphasis on hypercube architecture. The authors describe how they used an experimental approach to configure different massively parallel machines, design and implement basic system software, and develop algorithms for frequently used mathematical computations. They also devise performance models, measure the performance characteristics of several computers, and create a high-performance computing facility based exclusively on parallel computers. By addressing all issues involved in scientific problem solving, Parallel Computing Works! For those in the sciences, the findings reveal the usefulness of an important experimental tool.
