What is race? What is ethnicity? Although almost everyone has at least a basic understanding of what these concepts mean, the research on ethnic identity and Latino youth is relatively young making it hard to make consistent inferences on the topic and its impact. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the theoretical frameworks, definitions, and measurements used to explain ethnic identity development and to look at which environmental factors are currently being studied in relation to this concept. A systematic analysis of the literature was performed to assess how Latino ethnic identity was conceptualized and measured and whether any theoretical frameworks were used to center the concept.
Drawing on self-construal theory, social identity theory, and value theory, we conducted a review of literature, in-depth interviews, semi-structured questionnaires, and expert reviews. Data were collected from three samples of Chinese ethnic minorities mainly college students. Results showed that the multidimensional constructs with six shared first-order factors Minority Ethnic Consciousness, Exploration, Involvement, Alienation, Inheritance, and Mastery demonstrated a better fit for the data and supported the conceptual framework. Both questionnaires demonstrated adequate internal consistency reliability, convergent and discriminant validity, and ecological validity. They also extend the content and sample fields of value research. China is known to be a multiethnic nation, with the majority Han ethnic group Minzu representing mainstream culture and the 55 officially defined minority ethnic groups each with their own unique cultures.
Understanding Race and Privilege
Across the nation, children of all backgrounds are experiencing a time in which discussions about race, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, religion, and culture are at the forefront of their everyday lives. Many people avoid these discussions because they fear that conversations about race, bias, and racism lead to feelings of anger, guilt, discomfort, sadness, and at times disrespect. The current state of our Union, however, no longer allows for these tough conversations to be ignored. While uncomfortable for some, school psychologists are in a position to lead or at least participate in these conversations. By using their knowledge and expertise of systems-level change, school psychologists can facilitate the dialogue to bring about positive, productive outcomes. This document is part of a series of resources developed by the National Association of School Psychologists NASP in response to recent acts of racial violence and the increasingly uncivil discourse occurring across our country. NASP seeks to help schools and families engage in constructive dialogue about privilege, prejudice, power, and the ways that all of us can work together to shift the conversation from hate and violence toward understanding and respect to ultimately bring about positive change and unity to our communities.

One such comment was made by Jefferson Fish, a psychologist at St. Nevertheless, race is commonly and popularly defined in terms of biological traits—phenotypic differences in skin color, hair texture, and other physical attributes, often perceived as surface manifestations of deeper, underlying differences in intelligence, temperament, physical prowess, and sexuality. Thus, although race may have no biological meaning, as used in reference to human differences, it has an extremely important and highly contested social one. Clearly, there is an enormous gap between the scientific rejection of race as a concept, and the popular acceptance of it as an important organizing principle of individual identity and collective consciousness.

I n Chapter 3 , we developed a two-part definition of racial discrimination: differential treatment on the basis of race that disadvantages a racial group and treatment on the basis of inadequately justified factors other than race that disadvantages a racial group differential effect. We focus our discussion on discrimination against disadvantaged racial minorities. Our definition encompasses both individual behaviors and institutional practices. To be able to measure the existence and extent of racial discrimination of a particular kind in a particular social or economic domain, it is necessary to have a theory or concept or model of how such discrimination might occur and what its effects might be. The theory or model, in turn, specifies the data that are needed to test the theory, appropriate methods for analyzing the data, and the assumptions that the data and analysis must satisfy in order to support a finding of discrimination.

Census Bureau from to In its first national census, the young American republic not only counted its population; it racially classified it. Always, however, the government held fast to two premises: First, it makes policy sense to put every American into one and only one of a limited number of discrete race groups, with the decennial census being the primary vehicle by which the counting and classifying should take place. Second, when policy treats Americans differently depending on what race they belong to, it should make use of this government classification.
