History and Class Consciousness

Class consciousness , the self-understanding of members of a social class. This modern sociological concept has its origins in, and is closely associated with, Marxist theory. Although Karl Marx himself did not articulate a theory of class consciousness , he intimated the concept in his characterization of the working class. Class consciousness is a historical phenomenon, born out of collective struggle. In this sense, Marx did not approach class consciousness as a matter of pure ideality. Because Marxism considers social classes to have objective identities and interests, its conception of class consciousness includes the possibility of its antithesis: false consciousness. From the perspective of Marxism, it concerns primarily the tension between the historical mission of the working class to destroy capitalism and realize the socialist revolution and its understanding thereof.

The book consists of a series of essays treating, among other topics, the definition of orthodox Marxism, the question of legality and illegality, Rosa Luxemburg as a Marxist, the changing function of Historic Marxism, class consciousness, and the substantiation and consciousness of the Proletariat. It goes without saying that the problem was omnipresent. A few years after History and Class Consciousness was published, it was moved into the focus of philosophical discussion by Heidegger in his Being and Time , a place which it maintains to this day largely as a result of the position occupied by Sartre and his followers. The philologic question raised by L. Goldmann, who considered Heidegger's work partly as a polemic reply to my admittedly unnamed work, need not be discussed here. It suffices today to say that the problem was in the air, particularly if we analyze its background in detail in order to clarify its effect, the mixture of Marxist and Existentialist thought processes, which prevailed especially in France immediately after the Second World War.

History & Class Consciousness

The concept refers to the systematic misrepresentation of dominant social relations in the consciousness of subordinate classes. Members of a subordinate class workers, peasants, serfs suffer from false consciousness in that their mental representations of the social relations around them systematically conceal or obscure the realities of subordination, exploitation, and domination those relations embody. Related concepts include mystification, ideology, and fetishism.

False consciousness , in philosophy , particularly within critical theory and other Marxist schools and movements, the notion that members of the proletariat unwittingly misperceive their real position in society and systematically misunderstand their genuine interests within the social relations of production under capitalism. Despite its close assocation with Marxism , the term false consciousness was never used by Karl Marx. The concept was further developed in the 20th century by Marxist scholars such as the German-born American philosopher Herbert Marcuse and the French sociologist Henri Lefebvre. Since the late 20th century the concept has been utilized outside explicitly Marxist theorizing in studies of oppression on the basis of gender, sexual orientation , ethnicity , and race. Although overlooked by critics, the literary-theoretical specificity of HCC is hiding in plain sight. For the present essay, recognition is to be understood as dramatic or narrative anagnorisis , not as intersubjectivity or Neo-Hegelian acknowledgment. Anagnorisis occurs when Oedipus discovers his true breeding and finds his past to be steeped in incest and parricide.

In December , Budapest lay in turmoil. Domestically, defeat brought massive social and economic disturbances. There was every reason to believe that Hungary itself would follow the same path. Bolshevism rests on the metaphysical assumption that good can issue from evil, that it is possible, as Razumikhin says in Crime and Punishment , to lie our way through to the truth. This writer cannot share this faith, and therefore sees an insoluble dilemma at the root of Bolshevism.

It has been suggested that the concept of reification as employed in the philosopher Martin Heidegger 's Being and Time was influenced by History and Class Consciousness , though such a relationship remains disputed. In the essay "What is Orthodox Marxism? On the contrary, orthodoxy refers exclusively to method.
