Anti-naturalists share the conviction that something is wrong with the naturalistic conceptual frame and with the idea that in principle all events are explainable by using the means of physics. Physicalist naturalism is the modern form of old fashioned materialism. And there is no doubt that naturalism is still going strong notwithstanding its critiques. Assuming that our language of morals is objectivist as John Mackie conceded Mackie , the project of analytical philosophy to transform ethics into philosophy of language showing that the ordinary language use of normative predicates like ought or good can and should be interpreted as expressing subjective attitudes, collapsed. Footnote 1 Since then the prevailing scope of analytical ethics has been to reconcile naturalist metaphysics, normative ethics and moral motivation.

Mind and Cosmos: Why the Materialist Neo-Darwinian Conception of Nature is Almost Certainly False

My runner-up this time is Rupert Sheldrake's The Science Delusion , though in fact it had a strikingly decent reception for a book also critiquing scientistic dogmatism. Steven Pinker dammed it with faint praise when he described it in a tweet as "the shoddy reasoning of a once-great thinker". All in all, Nagel's gadfly stung and whipped them into a fury. Disparagement is particularly unfair, though, because the book is a model of carefulness, sobriety and reason. If reading Sheldrake feels daring, Tallis thrilling and Fodor worthwhile but hard work, reading Nagel feels like opening the door on to a tidy, sunny room that you didn't know existed.

This book argues that the widely accepted world view of materialist naturalism is untenable. The mind-body problem cannot be confined to the relation between animal minds and animal bodies. If materialism cannot accommodate consciousness and other mind-related aspects of reality, then we must abandon a purely materialist understanding of nature in general, extending to biology, evolutionary theory, and cosmology. Since minds are features of biological systems that have developed through evolution, the standard materialist version of evolutionary biology is fundamentally incomplete. And the cos And the cosmological history that led to the origin of life and the coming into existence of the conditions for evolution cannot be a merely materialist history.

Thomas Nagel - Mind & Cosmos

Nagel argues that the materialist version of evolutionary biology is unable to account for the existence of mind and consciousness , and is therefore at best incomplete. He writes that mind is a basic aspect of nature, and that any philosophy of nature that cannot account for it is fundamentally misguided. Nagel's position is that principles of an entirely different kind may account for the emergence of life, and in particular conscious life, and that those principles may be teleological , rather than materialist or mechanistic. He stresses that his argument is not a religious one he is an atheist , and that it is not based on the theory of intelligent design ID , though he also writes that ID proponents such as Michael Behe , Stephen C. Meyer , and David Berlinski do not deserve the scorn with which their ideas have been met by the overwhelming majority of the scientific establishment. The book generated significant criticism from numerous scientists and philosophers, including from Steven Pinker , Daniel Dennett and Elliott Sober. Chorost also suggests the book would have received less criticism had Nagel not endorsed criticisms raised by proponents of intelligent design, despite Nagel's not having endorsed intelligent design as a solution.

To be sure, Nagel is far from siding with the intellectual cop-outs of intelligent design. Humans are addicted to the hope for a final reckoning, but intellectual humility requires that we resist the temptation to assume that tools of the kind we now have are in principle sufficient to understand the universe as a whole. The greatest advances in the physical and biological sciences were made possible by excluding the mind from the physical world. This has permitted a quantitative understanding of the world, expressed in timeless, mathematically formulated physical laws, But at some point it will be necessary to make a new start on a more comprehensive understanding that includes the mind. It seems inevitable that such an understanding will have a historical dimension as well as a timeless one.

The remaining three chapters argue in turn that consciousness, cognition and value are not reducible, provide arguments as to why this renders them unintelligible for neo-Darwinists, and develop a sketch of an alternative way of understanding them. As Nagel puts it: The

See a Problem?
