In Vietnam, social media has become an emerging and popular communication platform. Despite the powerful effect of social media in conditioning a crisis, and the trend to integrate social media into crisis management strategies in many countries, Vietnamese companies have often ignored or underutilized these channels. Therefore, this study seeks to fill the gap, to understand how Vietnamese companies perceive the importance and use of social media in crisis communication. Application of Social Media in Crisis Management
The use of social media in crisis communication is growing and spreading in an instantaneous speed. The social media technology enables immediate information sharing reaching millions of users on various social media platforms. This paper has gathered lessons learnt from the experiences of the Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service in the UK, the Oslo Police Operation Center in Norway, and from an extensive literature review on social media and crisis communication. The purpose of this paper was to gather best practices that can help crisis managers when attempting to use social media as a crisis communication tool. The paper had two cases with semi-structured interviews with representatives from two crisis management organizations Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service in the UK dealing with safety and Oslo Police Operation Center in Norwa dealing with security.

Abstract: Social media has become the most used and active way of communication; however, studies that look at social media use in crisis management are in their growing stage. Thus, this study analyses these growing body of knowledge that researched into social media and crisis management. A review was undertaken between October to January which entails sourcing and retrieving materials from an electronic database. The findings of this review confirmed that the growth of social media has transformed crisis communication landscape because it allows more interactivity. Still, a crisis could also be catalysed by social media because of its nature. This signifies that the crisis can be created in social media, as well as distributed by social media, respectively. Yet, the potential of social media as a crisis resolution tool is indisputable.
