In certain circumstances, ground-water causes geotechnical problems and can be considered a nuisance rather than a blessing. The cases where ground-water creates considerable complications include construction, tunnelling, mining, landslides, and land subsidence. The development of hydrogeology as a science has proved over the years to substantially reduce the severe problems and disasterous problems caused by ground-water. Groundwater migrates from areas of higher hydraulic head toward lower hydraulic head, transporting dissolved solutes through the combined processes of advection and dispersion. Advection refers to the bulk movement of solutes carried by flowing groundwater. Dispersion refers to the spreading of the contaminant plume from highly concentrated areas to less concentrated areas. In many groundwater transport models, solute transport is described by the advection-dispersion-reaction equation in which dispersion coefficients can be calculated as the sum of molecular diffusion, mechanical dispersion, and macrodispersion. Transmissivity is an important hydraulic parameter to determine the amount of water passed horizontally across a given saturated thickness of an aquifer. One technique that can be used, but little adopted, is the capture zone analysis. In this paper, capture zone analytical equations were used to estimate transmissivity values in order to verify the effectiveness of this methodology as alternative in situations where other traditional methods present implementation difficulties. The results were compared with field data estimated by aquifer tests conducted in the same region. A sensitivity analysis was also performed to identify possible discrepancies between the analytical and field data results.
Ground-water as a nuisance
The PDF version was downloaded more than times in the first week. And, as surface water — the water in river and lakes — becomes increasingly scarce, people are using groundwater for drinking water and irrigation. So people in areas short of water tend to pump fossil groundwater, drawing down water tables significantly, with very little regulation.

The Groundwater Project, a non-profit organization, registered in Canada, is committed to contribute to advancement in education by creating and making available online free high-quality groundwater educational material for all. The Groundwater Project is led by Dr. John Cherry, recipient of the Stockholm Water Prize, and managed by a member international Steering Committee and a larger and globally diverse Advisory Committee. To advance the state of the science worldwide, the authors then agreed to provide free downloads of the original text and translations through the Hydrogeologists Without Borders website. This laudable initiative provided the inspiration for the much larger Groundwater Project aimed at updating and largely expanding the coverage of the original book. As of today, more than 20 institutions are partnering with us and many others are on their way. The Groundwater Project was initiated in to cover nearly all aspects of groundwater relevant to both developed and developing countries.
