Nucleic acids are the polymers of nucleotides. Nucleotide synthesis is an anabolic mechanism generally involving the chemical reaction of phosphate , pentose sugar , and a nitrogenous base. Destruction of nucleic acid is a catabolic reaction. Additionally, parts of the nucleotides or nucleobases can be salvaged to recreate new nucleotides. Both synthesis and degradation reactions require enzymes to facilitate the event. Defects or deficiencies in these enzymes can lead to a variety of diseases. Nucleotides can be separated into purines and pyrimidines.
The five bases that are found in nucleotides are often represented by their initial letter: adenine, A; guanine, G; cytosine, C; thymine, T; and uracil, U. You are not required to memorize the structures of these bases, but you must know how each one bonds to the sugar unit in a nucleotide. The Learning Objective of this Module is to identify the different molecules that combine to form nucleotides. The repeating, or monomer, units that are linked together to form nucleic acids are known as nucleotides. Nucleotides can be further broken down to phosphoric acid H 3 PO 4 , a pentose sugar a sugar with five carbon atoms , and a nitrogenous base a base containing nitrogen atoms.
