In her novel, He She It, Marge Piercy questions ideas of gender and gender roles in a futuristic society. Piercy sets the stage of her story in a temporarily safe haven called Tikva, a Jewish slum where matriarchy holds a subtle but evident power. The story's central character is Shira Shipman, a highly educated recent divorcee, who has lost custody of her son to her ex-husband. While the deterioration of the marriage may mirror modern circumstances, the decision to give custody to the father is definitely a creation in Piercy's arcane world.

Marge Piercy's science-fiction visions of the future have made important inroads into what has been a traditionally masculine territory. Clarke Award is already gaining considerable attention as well. These works, similar in their imaginative power and political commitment, are otherwise quite different, and Piercy's move from the first to the second can be taken as indicative of the increasingly complex intermixture of utopian and dystopian moods that has informed feminist imaginative fiction in the last few decades. Woman on the Edge of Time was written in the mids and reflects some of the utopian optimism of the women's movement of that era, though it has a significant grim side as well. He, She, and It, meanwhile, was written at the end of the s, for many a decidedly dark decade for women's causes.
